Letter of Declaration against Omicron Subvariant BF.7

2022-09-05

Background

According to the WHO, as of 7 October 2022, there have been 617,597,680 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The latest variants of concern (VOCs) have largely replaced other co-circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants. Delta reached almost 90% of all viral sequences submitted on GISAID by October 2021, and Omicron is currently the dominant variant circulating globally, accounting for >98% of viral sequences shared on GISAID after February 2022.

Since the Omicron variant emerged in late 2021, several subvariants have been observed. They’re all considered to be VOCs, as the virus is circulating at intense levels worldwide. The BA.5 strain of Omicron is currently the dominant subvariant globally and the most contagious so far.

As fall rolls in, a new Omicron subvariant, called BA.5.2.1.7 or BF.7 for short, is a sublineage of BA.5 and is now spreading rapidly all over the world. So far, the variant of BF.7 is responsible for 25% of new cases in Belgium, and 10% of cases in Germany, Denmark, and France.
