Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is an acute infectious disease caused by enteroviruses. It is most common in preschoolers, especially those under three years old. It is mainly transmitted through close contact with the infected and subclinically infected individuals and gets into the body through the respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract. The most common symptoms of the disease include macules, papules and herpes on hands, feet, and mouth. A small number of patients may suffer from meningitis, encephalitis, encephalomyelitis, pulmonary edema, and circulatory disorders. CoxA16 and EV71 are the major causative agents of HFMD, and the disease-induced brainstem encephalitis and neurogenic pulmonary edema are the leading causes of death.
The BioPerfectus Enterovirus Real Time PCR Kit is intended for the qualitative detection of nucleic acids of enterovirus 71 (EV71), coxsackieviruses A9, A16, B2, and B5 (CoxA9, CoxA16, CoxB2 and CoxB5) and echovirus 30 (Echo30) in human throat swabs.
