Streptococcus pneumoniae (SP) is a lancet-shaped, gram-positive bacterium that naturally colonizes the upper respiratory tract of humans. While it often exists asymptomatically, it acts as an opportunistic agent, primarily affecting vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Biologically, SP possesses nearly 100 distinct serotypes, with over 30 recognized as highly pathogenic. It remains a major global public health challenge, representing a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality both in China and worldwide. The bacterium is frequently linked to severe conditions including pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, sinusitis, otitis media, and endocarditis. The World Health Organization notes that SP is associated with approximately 1.6 million fatalities annually, heavily skewing towards children under the age of five (0.7–1 million). The management of these conditions is increasingly complicated by the bacterium's growing antimicrobial resistance, underscoring the severe and prolonged health impact of these infections.
